Experience a new type of challenge

For the first time in history, Tall Ships America will bring it's TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Series of Tall Ships® races and port festivals to the Gulf of Mexico. Become part of the crew navigating the ship during the race and partaking in the Parade of Sail for your end port!

SSV Oliver Hazard Perry is a 200 ft, three-masted, full-rigged Tall Ship. With 20 sails and 7 miles of rope on board, there is no room for idle hands when we set sail! Life on Oliver Hazard Perry means you become a part of our crew, from hauling lines, to climbing aloft, to taking the helm, you will participate in every aspect of sailing the ship. No previous sailing experience or extraordinary fitness is required, while life aboard is active and hard work, a positive attitude and sense of adventure is the only prerequisite to join!

Some Things To Note:

Helping sail Oliver Hazard Perry in a Tall Ships challenge is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and will be a much different experience than our regular sailing voyages. To ensure you fully enjoy your time on board, please note the following:

  • This is a shorter and more condensed program that requires the ship to arrive in the next port in a timely manner. This may mean that there will be limited sailing opportunities and the ship may motor to ensure a prompt arrival for the Parade of Sail in Pensacola
  • Due to being open to the public for deck tours, embarkation is at 7pm on Sunday, April 8th in Galveston. Trainees are welcome to drop their belongings off during the day for safe-keeping and explore the city of Galveston. There is plenty to see and do
  • While the ship is docked, due to USCG regulations, hot meals will not be provided. This means that dinner on Day 1 will not be included, and dinner on Thursday night, after arriving in Pensacola, will not be included. Breakfast on Friday morning, April 13th, will be continental (bagels, cereal, fruit)

For overall safety and program experience, any adult over the age of 65 will be required to show proof of a medical health screening to ensure the minimum level of physical fitness is met. This must be submitted a minimum of 30 days prior to program start date.

Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island highly suggests all trainees purchase traveler’s insurance in case of cancellation or trip interruption.

A voyage aboard the Tall Ship Oliver Hazard Perry is safe and can be exhilarating. But while sailing aboard Oliver Hazard Perry is an adventure, it is also comfortable: our professional chef prepares three fine meals each day, berths and cabins are comfortably furnished, the ship is air conditioned throughout and there is ample hot water for showers (although we must conserve our fresh water supply on longer passages).
