How am I going to get to and from one of the most remote places on the planet?

Although dog sledding back would be fun, we have made arrangements with the canadian arctic Charter Airlines, First Air to make your travel to and from the Arctic as smooth and cost efficient as possible.

1. Arctic Northbound Leg 1: Lunenburg – St John's

Both destinations are serviced by regular scheduled airlines. Please make your own flight arrangements and send your travel details to info@ohpri.org. The closest international airport to Lunenburg is Halifax (YHZ) (52 miles), please arrange your flight to arrive between 12-2pm on Sunday June 25. From there you will meet one of our crew members in the airport and as a group will travel on a private bus to Lunenburg departing at 3:30pm. St John's international Airport (YYT) is about 5 miles out of the city, please schedule outbound flights from 10am onwards on Saturday July 1. We will help arrange outbound taxi's. Round trip Multi city flights from Boston - Halifax and St John's - Boston are about $500 (at time of writing in February)

 

2. Arctic Northbound Leg 2: St John's - Pond Inlet

St John's International Airport (YYT) is serviced by regular scheduled airlines and is about 5 miles out of the city. Please make your own flight arrangements and send your travel details to info@ohpri.org. We will work with you to coordinate trainee travel to/from the airport. Please allow time to arrive at the ship by 5pm on Friday July 7. One way flight from Boston to St John's is about $250 (at time of writing in February)

We have chartered a plane from First Air to take all of our trainees back at the end of the program. The plane departs Pond Inlet on July 28 at 17:45 (after bringing in our team from URI) and arrives in Iqaluit at 20:18. Iqaluit is located on Baffin Island and is the capital city of Nunavut. It is the only city in Nunavut and has the lowest population of any capital city in Canada. OHPRI staff will meet trainees from the plane and accompany them to Nunastar Hotel for the night. On July 29 trainees and staff will all depart Iqaluit at 09:15 and arrive in Ottawa at 12:25. The total cost for the flight from Pond Inlet to Ottawa and 1 night hotel in Iqaluit is $2,600 per person (this can be paid through our online registration program). Please note there is a strict baggage allowance of 50lbs per person on the chartered flight. Our staff member will be in Ottawa to help with onward travel, please send details to info@ohpri.org

5. EASTBOUND LEG 1: CAMBRIDGE BAY - RESOLUTE BAY

We have chartered a plane from First Air to fly everyone up to Cambridge Bay. The plane departs Edmonton early on August 27 so we have made arrangements to reserve rooms for everyone at Nunastar Hotel for the night of August 26. The flight departs Cambridge Bay at 07:30 on August 27 and arrives in Cambridge Bay at 13:00 (with a stop in Yellowknife). The total cost for the flight from Edmonton to Cambridge Bay and 1 night hotel in Edmonton (based on double occupancy) is $1,400 per person (this can be paid through our online registration program). Please note there is a strict baggage allowance of 50lbs per person on the chartered flight.

We have chartered a plane from First Air to fly everyone back from Resolute Bay. The plane departs Resolute Bay on Sunday September 10 at 18:20 and arrives Iqaluit 23:34 (with a stop in Pond Inlet). Iqaluit is located on Baffin Island and is the capital city of Nunavut. It is the only city in Nunavut and has the lowest population of any capital city in Canada. We have reserved rooms at Nunastar Hotel  in Iqalait for the night of September 10. On September 11 our flight will all depart Iqaluit at 13:45 and arrive in Ottawa at 16:50. The total cost for the return flight to Ottawa and 1 night hotel in Iqaluit is $2,900 per person (this can be paid through our online registration program). Please note there is a strict baggage allowance of 50lbs per person on the chartered flight. 

 

4. Arctic Eastbound Leg 2: Resolute Bay - Pond Inlet

We have chartered a plane from First Air to fly everyone up to Resolute Bay. The plane departs Ottawa at 09:15 on August 27 and arrives in Resolute Bay at 17:48 (with a stop in Iqaluit and Pond Inlet). The total cost for the flight from Ottawa to Resolute Bay is $2,610 per person (this can be paid through our online registration program). Please note there is a strict baggage allowance of 50lbs per person on the chartered flight.

We have reserved rooms at Nunastar Hotel  in Iqalait for the night of September 20. On September 21 our flight will all depart Iqaluit at 13:45 and arrive in Ottawa at 16:50. The total cost for the return flight to Ottawa and 1 night hotel in Iqaluit is $2,400 per person (this can be paid through our online registration program). Please note there is a strict baggage allowance of 50lbs per person on the chartered flight. 

 

5. Arctic Southbound Leg 1: Pond Inlet - St John's Newfoundland

We have chartered a plane from First Air to fly everyone up to Pond Inlet. The plane departs Ottawa at 09:15 on September 20 and arrives in Pond Inlet at 17:12 (with a stop in Iqaluit). The total cost for the flight from Ottawa to Pond Inlet is $2,200 per person (this can be paid through our online registration program). Please note there is a strict baggage allowance of 50lbs per person on the chartered flight.

St John's International Airport (YYT) is serviced by regular scheduled airlines and is about 5 miles out of the city. Please schedule your departure anytime after 10am on Wednesday October 11. One way flight from St John's to Boston is about $250 (at time of writing in February)

 

6. Arctic Southbound Leg 2: St John's - Newport

St John's International Airport (YYT) is serviced by regular scheduled airlines and is about 5 miles out of the city. Please allow time to arrive at the ship by 5pm on Tuesday October 17. One way flight from Boston to St John's is about $250 (at time of writing in February). 

Upon arrival in Newport, RI we will dock at our home berth at Fort Adams. The closest airport to Newport is Providence TF Green (PVD) (30 miles, 55 mins). There is a RIPTA public bus service that departs from the Gateway Center: route 14, and we can shuttle you across the harbor to the bus station in Newport. Although you may find a taxi or Uber to be more convenient. Boston Logan Airport is also an option and Peter Pan Bus operates a service from Newport Gateway Center to Boston Logan airport (via South Station).
