Oliver Hazard Perry is seeking a Captain:

The Captain must hold a minimum of a 500 ton Masters License, Near Coastal, with Auxiliary Sail Endorsement. The Captain must have strong ship handling skills and experience handling vessels of similar size, and must be comfortable docking and anchoring at a variety of locations. The Captain is ultimately responsible for the safe operation of the ship. While we do carry a full time licensed Engineer, the Captain is also expected to be familiar with the ship’s systems.

The Oliver Hazard Perry is a full-rig ship, so square rig and traditional sailing experience are strongly preferred. In addition, the Perry runs dynamic sail-training programs at sea. All of our crew are considered educators, and while we do carry a full time Program Manager on board, the captain is ultimately in charge of making sure that our educational program is being fully implemented. The right candidate should be a high energy and enthusiastic person, who can live and work with students in close quarters, and serve as a role-model for both trainees and crew. Near coastal voyage planning and execution is required. Crew management and organization is a critical component of the position.

The Oliver Hazard Perry is a newly built, full-rig ship of 471 gross tons, and 196’ LOA. She is steel-hulled, with twin Caterpillar diesel engines and a hydraulic bow thruster. Modern accommodations below, with showers, heat, air conditioning, and a private cabin for the Captain.

Applicants should send a resume, cover letter and copy of their license to Chris Dimock (chris@ohpri.org)
