Summer Voyages '17
In 2017 SSV Oliver Hazard Perry will make a historic voyage north to the Arctic Circle and into the Northwest Passage on an expedition in partnership with the University of Rhode Island and funded in by the National Science Foundation (See here for more info). While the students for this voyage will be selected by the University of Rhode Island there are still ways in which you can get involved. Firstly, there will be live video feeds through the URI's Inner Space Center regularly streaming from the ship sharing real time discoveries and the excitement of life in the Arctic. Secondly, we are running our OHPRI summer voyages for young adults (high school and university age) in Canada in July on the route north and have two offshore ocean sailing experiences:
Leg 1 (1 week): Lunenburg, Nova Scotia – St Johns, New Foundland (570nm)
• 5pm Sunday June 25th – 9am Saturday July 1: St Johns
• Possible stops in L'Anse aux Meadows (St Pierre & Micquelon)
Leg 2 (3 week): St Johns, New Foundland - Pond Inlet, Nunavut (2,000nm)
• 5pm Friday July 7th – 9am Friday July 28
• Possible stop in Greenland
Open to 15 years and up (please call for adult availability; a limited number of private 2-person cabins are available for both legs; Additional $500 pp on leg 1 and $1,000 pp on leg 2).
These voyages are going to be more challenging than our previous coastal voyages that anchor or dock each night. As before, trainees will become part of the crew, from hauling lines, to climbing aloft, to taking the helm, they will participate in every aspect of sailing the ship both day and night as we rotate through a 24 hour watch rotation on long passages.
If you are interested in applying for a space on one of these voyages please complete our online application form here
Travel to and from Lunenburg and St Johns will be possible through regular air services. However, we will be chartering a plane from Pond Inlet to Ottawa, and expect the price to be about $1,000 per person for this flight.
Please note: A PASSPORT is essential for this voyage.
Our application process will involve an initial online application and follow up phone interview, then if selected you will be sent a link for the registration form and payment processing. Please note there is no payment due until you are selected for the program. Once selected a $500 deposit is due, and the remainder of the balance in two payments; 4/15/17 and 5/15/17
