Education Goes Virtual at OHPRI

AT OLIVER HAZARD PERRY RHODE ISLAND, WE’RE BRINGING THE SHIP TO YOU ONLINE

OHPRI’s YouTube Channel

As social distancing becomes the norm across Rhode Island and the country, the staff at Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island are safe sheltering at home or aboard ship. Although we haven’t been able to hold tours and volunteer days, and our scheduled ramp up for our summer sailing season has been significantly slowed, we don’t want this to prevent Rhode Islanders from seeing their flagship.

We’re bringing our ship to you online, with new content on our social media and YouTube channel. Via our virtual offerings, you’ll be able to get a glimpse of behind the scenes work on board, view educational webinars, and participate in fun learning challenges for school-age kids. Below are some of our current and upcoming offerings; new videos are added weekly on YouTube and announced on Facebook and Instagram.

Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel and be the first to know when a new video is posted!

WHAT’S ON DECK

CONSTRUCTION SERIES

Our Oliver Hazard Perry Construction Series features our ship’s engineer, Jackson Hruschka. Follow Jackson as he puts together the ship’s Bosun’s Stores shelving and storage space. Along the way, he’ll teach basic painting and carpentry skills.

SHIP TOURS

You can also join Jackson for a narrated tour of the ship’s engine room.

STEAM CHALLENGE

The OHPRI STEAM challenge is our series for school-age children. STEAM, an acronym standing for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, is an important component of OHPRI programs. Educational Programs Manager Jen Kendrigan guides parents and kids through fun science experiments that you can do at home, with materials you already have around the house.

VIRTUAL SEMINAR: OHPRI X SALVE

At the end of March 2020, OHPRI partnered with Salve Regina University and Dr. Myra Edelstein for a virtual freshman seminar. Captain Jonathan Kabak, OHPRI’s CEO, used the Oliver Hazard Perry and the lessons of the maritime industry to explore innovation, creativity, and resilient communities. The entire hour-and-a-half long seminar is available on our channel.

STRAIGHT FROM THE SHIP

Finally, our “Straight From the Ship” series is a relaxing change of pace; these short, 1-2 minute videos feature footage of daily life aboard ship and were originally released on our Instagram.
