Perry Corps - School Year 2022-2023
Grades: Rising 11th and 12th graders
The Perry Corps High School Program takes 11th and 12th graders and prepares them to be members of the 21st century workforce. Programming is structured around the academic calendar and extends to include an immersive month-long summer program. Starting in September, participants experience afterschool, single day, and overnight programming on Rhode Island’s Flagship the Sailing School Vessel (SSV) OLIVER HAZARD PERRY both underway and dockside, and at satellite sites including the United States Maritime Resource Center’s (USMRC) facilities in Middletown, RI. The culmination of the program is a twenty day summer capstone experience for the top performing students in each year’s cohort. Perry Corps training consists of a mix of standards-based, industry curriculum, industry exposure, and hands on skills application. Graduates of the program complete a number of Standards of Training Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) competency courses delivered in partnership with USMRC. These US Coast Guard approved courses include Basic Training, Fast Rescue Boat Training, Leadership and Teamwork Skills, and Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch. Trainees also complete aspects of the American Boat and Yacht Council Marine Technology Curriculum, and curriculum covered in the Tall Ships America’s Sail Training Syllabus and Logbook. Throughout their time aboard, trainees learn the operations of the OLIVER HAZARD PERRY and utilize their new skills and knowledge to complete work onboard. Incorporated into their experience, trainees serve as crew and guides for OHPRI’s community programming, which provide them with valuable public speaking experience while helping OHPRI to provide quality programming to those that visit the ship.
